It is often tnot easy, for example for a CDC emerger, to separate all the fine CDC hairs from the quill to incorporate them as fine wings into the dry fly pattern. The Stonfo 726 CDC Winding Tool is an ingenious tool to separate all hairs of a CDC or other feather from the keel with only one cut. To do this, clamp the thick end of the feather into the Winding Tool and wrap it tightly around the tool, much like a hook shank. Once the entire spring is coiled or tied around the tool, the sleeve sitting on the tool is pulled forward over the wrap. Then you can grab the forward pointing hairs and cut off the roll behind it consisting of the quill. This way you manage to separate all the fine hairs from the quill with just one cut! And the best thing is, they have as well the perfect cut to tie them directly.
