Thomas & Thomas rods are handcrafted on American soil (Greenfield, MA) since 1969 and enjoy worldwide recognition for their high-end fly rods, which feature an absolutely perfect finish.
The Thomas&Thomas Exocett Surf is a real workhorse from the house of T&T. Actually a single handed rod, but to support a powerful overhead cast, it has been given a grip for the underhand and is thus equally counted among the double handed rods. This unusual technique is becoming more and more popular for chasing Rooster, GT and Co. in the surf. The "Surf" rod is loaded and fired at ultra fast with two hands in this fishery, with short head lines such as a Rio Outbound Short, whether headwind or not, doesn´t matter with this bullet. An assertive pull with this rod is enough and the complete line shoots over the waves directly in front of the nose of the fast predators.
It did not take long until the Exocett Surf was also indispensable in freshwater. Besides fishing for big pike and even bigger muskies, the rod quickly found popularity in a very special circle, the circle of sworn hucho hucho fishermen! The Surf gives you the opportunity to do exactly what you want to achieve when hunting the mystical hucho hucho. Carry heavy, ultra-fast sinking heads and a light but large streamer with ease. The short multi-module Strato-Therm two-handed blank has enough power to shoot exactly these overweight setups across the river with ease, to effectively fish the royal Danube salmon, whether from the boat or land - simply brilliant!
The components used, as well as the workmanship of the 11.2 foot (3.41 m) rod, are a testament to the highest quality and attention to detail. The titanium rings of the T&T rod are hand wrapped with extreme precision on the dark blue matte blank and perfectly varnished. Each part of the 4-piece rod is marked with the number of the batch used, ensuring that each part is 100% made from the same materials and will be restored in the event of a warranty claim! The extended handle, as well as the grip part of the underhand is made of an almost non-porous cork, so that even after years no inclusions are visible. For an extra secure hold of the reel on the reel seat made of aluminum provide two lock nuts, which can be tightened with extra grip thanks to their milled out sections and the grooved sections.
Not only the multi-module Strato-Therm blank of the Thomas&Thomas Exocett Surf can be pushed to the limit in the drill, but also the components of the rod can withstand the hardest loads and that for years!
Exocett Surf Multi-Module Strato-Therm Blank
The Exocett Surf's blank is a crisp, powerful blank that loads smoothly and has a very fast recovery. The powerful backwheel is not stressed at all during precise casts at close range. Only when it comes to shooting the flies through the wind at the longest distances or heavy shot heads, the rod draws from the full and transfers the complete power into the fly line. The enormous power reserves in the lower part of the rod and the length of 11.2 feet also ensure that you keep the upper hand in the drill of a GT on a reef edge sets and show the fish which way to go and not the other way around!
Proprietary Bonding Agents
The performance of graphite fibers depends on the quality of the binder that holds them together. Binding technology has improved rapidly in recent years, and T&T has worked with industry leaders to develop a proprietary resin that improves the performance of graphite materials. In this new resin, T&T uses nanoscale particles to eliminate microscopic voids in the graphite. Filling these tiny voids with this high-performance resin improves the strength, durability and dampening properties of the rod blank while reducing overall weight.
Ferrule Reinforcement Process / FRP
In fly rods, the mating joints are the areas subjected to the most critical stresses. For this reason, T&T hand-rolls a strategic additional layer of high-strength graphite over these areas. In addition to strengthening the sleeve (ferrule), the process adds a special detail to the fly rods.
Optimal Blank Curing / OBC
The performance qualities of the graphite blanks as well as the nanoparticle resins used are highly dependent on the curing process. Changes in the curing process are immediately reflected in the performance of the blank. The curing process is taken very seriously at Thomas&Thomas and is performed only with a regulated, precise temperature control process. The OBC helps T&T achieve the highest level of performance from graphite and binder while maintaining strict quality control.
Low Friction Finish / LFF
If you've ever held a T&T rod with the LFF, you'll have noticed that the blank has a special feel. The Low Friction Finish uses nanotechnology to create a smooth surface that repels water and removes the surface tension that creates drag on the fly line during casting. The LFF gives Thomas & Thomas rods a performance advantage when casting and shooting fly lines.

100 % American Hand Made Fly Rods seit 1969! The rod you will eventually own!
