The company Diamondback Fly Rod Co. is by no means a new name in the fly fishing market, as since 1983, the premium manufacturer from Vermont has been crafting thoughtful rods for discerning fly anglers. However, especially in the last few years, American rods have come back into focus for demanding fly anglers, thanks to their thoughtful, application-oriented designs. The same holds true for the Ideal Nymph fly reel, which has been specifically tailored by the product designers to meet the unique requirements of modern nymph anglers.
The Ideal Nymph fly reel by Diamondback features an intricately machined design with an adjustable weight system totaling 40 grams, aiming to optimize the performance, precision, and balance of the rod-reel combination for tactical nymph fishing. During the reel's development, every aspect was considered to meet the challenges of Euro-Nymph-style fishing with extremely long, thin mono lines and delicate tippets also when targeting large fish.
One visually striking feature is the asymmetrical shape of the reel foot, which shifts the weight of the reel backward, improving the balance on modern nymph rods with extended lengths. Of course, standard dimensions are maintained to fit perfectly into any standard reel seat. For a change in the retrieve direction, the reel foot can be flipped so that the reel can be fished both left and right-handed.
To further enhance the balance on Euro-Nymph rods of varying lengths, the reel is equipped with a thoughtful weight system, allowing for the flexible addition or removal of up to four counterweights, each weighing 10 grams, to ensure the optimal balance on any nymph rod.
Additionally, the spool cage is closed to prevent thin nymph lines from slipping through. Furthermore, diameter and spacing tolerance between the spool and cage have been minimized through precise CNC machining to prevent the line from getting caught anywhere. This 5-axis CNC solution also accounts for the rounded surface without any sharp edges, maximizing protection for ultra-thin fly lines and delicate tippet strengths when the line is pulled off the reel at any speed and angle!
The extra-large diameter aids in quickly retrieving line to get fish on the reel during the fight. The exposed spool rim also allows for precise palming during the fight. The subtle click sound in both directions provides the corresponding audio feedback. The braking force of the powerful disc drag can be adjusted over two complete turns, from nearly open to fully closed. The maximum drag resistance is significantly higher than necessary for nymph fishing, making this reel suitable for saltwater applications as well. The startup inertia is extremely low to protect delicate tippets during strong head shakes or runs. Other thoughtful features of the reel include the extra-wide, non-slip handle and the matte black anodized, reflection-free finish.
