The modern Scientific Anglers Headway System is a fantastic double-handed shooting head for swinging flies for large fish – whether salmon, sea trout or steelhead. It combines a well-balanced taper design and the best materials available for a truly outstanding performance. In fact, this shooting head is designed to be used with the matching tips – the so-called Headway Tips.
First of all, these high-quality interchangeable T-Tips are equipped with the innovative Scientific Anglers AST Plus Technology (Advanced Shooting Technology), which is based on an additive that permanently diffuses to the surface of the line in order to maintain its fantastic slickness. Therefore, they will stay much smoother and they create less drag than ordinary fly lines. And of course, this technology sets new standards in terms of durability.
But these modern T-Tips have even more to offer. They have an innovative taper design that creates very appealing casting properties. In contrast to ordinary T-Tips, they have a front taper. Therefore, they are a lot easier to cast and they allow a very smooth turnover. Thereby, they will easily transport all kinds of salmon flies – whether tiny summer flies or heavily weighted tubes for fishing in high water. Further, they have a special surface structure, which makes them very easy to lift despite their considerable length. Since their material contains a lot of tungsten, they have a very high density and a thin diameter. This provides them with impressive sinking properties which will send your flies directly down into the “danger zone”. In fact, they are available in different sink rates – from T12 to T16. Therefore, they are perfect for building your customized multi tip system that can be configured to match your preferences and a specific type of river.
In short: The Headway T-Tips from Scientific Anglers combine very appealing casting properties and incredible versatility that allows you to do whatever the conditions require – no matter what. Therefore, they are a great choice for fishing salmon rivers all over the world!

The perfect combination for your rod:
Both the Headway Bellies and the Headway Tips are available in different lengths and weights. This allows you to choose the ideal line setup that perfectly matches your rod and style of fishing. When choosing a line setup, the combined weight of belly and tip should more or less match the ideal casting weight of your rod. In most cases, this can be achieved with multiple combinations, and therefore you can choose between different total lengths. For instance, when selecting a line for a class 9/10 rod, you can choose between different options. Combining a 31 g belly with a 15 ft tip will give you a line setup with a total weight of 40 g and a length of 12,5 m. If you prefer a more compact setup, you can also combine a 35 g belly with a shorter 9 ft tip. This combination will also result in a total weight of 40 g but with a more compact length of 10,9 m. As always, one basic rule applies: Generally speaking, a shorter line setup is easier to cast, but a longer setup allows longer casting distances and it requires less stripping after every swing. It’s up to you!
Variant | Weight | Length |
---|---|---|
T12 | 11,5 g (180 grain) | 4,6 m (15 ft) |
T14 | 13,5 g (205 grain) | 4,6 m (15 ft) |
T16 | 15,5 g (240 grain) | 4,6 m (15 ft) |
