Umpqua Phantom X Euro Nymph Leader 20ft

In many techniques of nymphing with tight lines (e.g., 'French Nymphing'), very long and thin leaders are used. The goal of these presentation techniques is to establish a nearly direct connection to the nymph without hindering its free drift. Even the slightest movements tighten the fine leader, and due to the low stretch of the monofilament line, they are transmitted as clear signals to the sensitive tip of the long rod (#2 - #4 with a length of 10ft. - 11ft.). Unlike other nymphing techniques, the bite is not seen but felt. Therefore, no normal floating indicators are used.

With the Phantom X Euro Nymph Leader, Umpqua offers a pre-tied leader specifically designed for fishing with short-line techniques. It has a stiff butt section made of fluorocarbon, which tapers down to a two-tone sighter, a tippet ring, and finally a 3 ft. (approx. 1 m) Phantom X Tippet, Umpqua's best fluorocarbon material.

This pre-tied leader is suitable for all types of weighted nymphs, as well as for dry dropper techniques or fishing with heavy jig streamers. With a length of 20 feet, it can cover both close range and greater distances.

Like any fluorocarbon, Umpqua's fluorocarbon has two major advantages: Firstly, fluorocarbon has a similar refractive index to water, meaning that leaders made of fluorocarbon are almost invisible in water. In crystal-clear waters, they are often superior to traditional nylon (monofilament) leaders. Secondly, fluorocarbon sinks slightly, while nylon floats on the surface. For this reason, and also due to its higher abrasion resistance, fluorocarbon is often used where stones or other structures pose a danger during a fight. These are exactly the advantages that help us when nymphing near the bottom!
