With the modern Headway Belly, Scientific Anglers presents a fantastic two-handed shooting head for swinging for large salmonids – whether it's salmon, sea trout, or steelhead. It combines a very balanced taper design with the best materials on the market for simply outstanding performance. With the addition of these "density compensated" sinking shooting heads, Scientific Anglers offers even more adaptability to the respective water conditions in combination with the corresponding Headway Tips.
Of course, it is equipped with the unique AST Plus (Advanced Shooting Technology). This is based on an additive that is incorporated into the line and ensures a smooth surface even after long-term use. This is made possible by diffusion – meaning the said substance migrates from the interior of the coating to the exterior, thereby permanently maintaining the surface of the line. The result is a line that not only remains significantly smoother for much longer but also noticeably causes less drag than comparable lines on the market.
But not only in terms of material does this compact shooting head have a lot to offer, because its harmonious design based on Scandinavian models gives it very appealing casting characteristics. Above all, it is remarkable how easy it is to cast. Additionally, the relatively high weight distribution in the rear of the head allows for very easy handling for controlled lifting and perfectly placed anchors. This forms the basis for its assertive casting characteristics and tight loops. In this way, it easily transports salmon flies of all kinds – from tiny summer flies to heavily weighted tubes for fishing in high water. Its design is aimed at being fished with the different tips of the Headway series – both with tapered versions and heavy T-tips. In combination with tips of different sinking speeds, it offers you the highest level of flexibility, allowing you to react spontaneously to the whims of nature – come what may. This intermediate version is suitable for a wide variety of conditions and situations. For a rather surface-near presentation, you can pair this shooting head with an intermediate tip. Nevertheless, in combination with an aggressive sinking tip, it allows for a deep presentation, making it very versatile. Moreover, its positioning below fast surface water makes it significantly easier to slow down the swing. This can make the all-important difference, especially at cold water temperatures – especially at the beginning of the season.
In short: The Headway Belly shooting head from Scientific Anglers combines enormous versatility with very appealing casting characteristics. In combination with different sink tips, it enables you to fish successfully in a wide range of different conditions. This makes it an excellent choice for varied fishing in salmon rivers all over the world!

The perfect combination for your rod:
Both the Headway shooting heads and the Headway tips are available in different lengths and resulting weights. This allows you to put together a perfect line setup that suits your preferences. The total weight consisting of shooting head and tip should roughly correspond to the ideal casting weight of your rod. This can usually be achieved through various combinations, giving you the choice between different total lengths. For example, in the case of a 9/10 weight rod, you can choose between different combinations. If you prefer a slightly longer line, the combination of a 31g head with a 15 ft tip is recommended. This setup has a weight of 40g and a length of 12.5m. To get a more compact setup, you can alternatively combine a 35g head with a short 9 ft tip. This combination also has a weight of 40g but only a length of 10.9m. The basic rule always applies: a shorter line setup is usually easier to cast. In contrast, a longer combination allows for slightly longer casts and requires less stripping after each swing. The choice is yours!
Weight (without tip) | Length |
---|---|
27g (415 grain) | 7.6m |
31g (480 grain) | 7.9m |
35g (540 grain) | 8.2m |
39g (600 grain) | 8.5m |
