The Woolly Worm is the predecessor of the world-famous Woolly Bugger and a very old fly pattern, which still has its absolute justification in every trout fly box. It can imitate many different insects and underwater-critters and can be fished in many different ways. Upstream as a nymph, in a dead swing as a wet fly, or with short, hectic strips as a small streamer. The palmered hackle provides volume and displaces water when stripped in, so that the lateral line organ of the fish is addressed. The body made of chenille gives the fly its color. In clearer water more subtle, natural colors work very well, in slightly cloudy and murky conditions, bright colors such as green or orange can very well be used. What all Woolly Worms have in common: the attractive red tail, which is an excellent bite point.
Hook size: #8
