Fishing on the surface is probably the most exciting way to fish for sea trout. The so-called furrowing on the surface triggers the hunting instinct in sea trout and leads to spectacular bites! However, with the adh-fishing sea trout fly - Gurgler, it can also be extremely effective to leave the fly on the surface and move it only occasionally. The Gurgler is a fly that has a foam back and thus drifts permanently on the surface. The high quality body hackle and tail of the fly provide a perfect silhouette against the sky. During the day we prefer the gray varaiante, while you can fish the black Gurgler around the clock.

• The gray gurgler is Johannes' simple all-purpose fly for surface fishing, both day and night:
  "With the gray gurgler on a size 8 hook, I'm pretty well-equipped for dry fly fishing on the coast. Naturally, this pattern doesn't perfectly imitate surface-swimming prey, but in my experience, that's often not necessary anyway. Gray (or brown) flies already mimic a good portion of potential "dry trout prey" quite well in terms of color. A fly tied on a size 8 hook is already quite a mouthful but can still pass as a large fly or beetle. It's not so much about perfectly imitating a specific prey but rather presenting something potentially edible, within the feeding zone, in an attractive way to a sea trout – and this pattern works very well for that. Sometimes the bites come only after the fly has landed, sometimes when it's moved a little, sometimes even during active retrieves: it varies, and I also have to experiment around. However, it's a fact that sea trout respond much better to dry or surface-fished patterns than most anglers think. I, too, had to be convinced by many trout that it's much more than just random catches ... nowadays, on some days, especially in August and September, I do much better when fishing dry. The gurgler has the advantage that it floats for a long time, and I can quickly remove some or all of the foam with a pair of scissors if the fish are only feeding on drowned food in the surface film."
