Fishing with large searching patterns is extremely exciting and has lured many large Trout to the surface. Often it is the first cast, placed in a promising piece of water that causes a merciless surface attack. Presumably, it is the size of the flies, coupled with a typical splash landing which attracts the attention of the fish, giving them the motivation to attack worthwhile prey. Overhanging bushes, sweeping currents, willow roots, and sunken deadwood: even large fish leave their safe holding spots to smash the surface for what they think will be a nice meal!
The Lucky Locust Brown is a high-floating and highly-visible dry fly, which can be used in very diverse waters and conditions. In midsummer, large land insects are common prey for hungry Trout, and this pattern is ideal for imitating grasshoppers, beetles, and more. Even if the fish are not actively feeding on the surface, this large pattern will be a good option to get them to commit to a surface attack. Furthermore, the fly can be fished in the hopper-dropper style and can carry heavy nymphs with ease due to its great floating characteristics. Of course, the Lucky Locust also produces aggressive bites when the fish are focussed on the surface in the evening or at night!
Hook Size: #8
