Martin Rieck aka 'Pelle' from World Fly Angler shows you one of his favourites for Pike fishing in this tying video: Pelle's BBB - Bleeding Black Baitfish. This pattern is tied with only a few materials and absorbs almost no water. This makes the BBB super easy to cast even on light tackle! Personally, Martin prefers to fish this pattern with on a 8-weight rod. We recommend this universal pattern for many different situations and waters. A big bonus is, that it can be adjusted at the tying vice easily if desired.
Minimal material use - Maximum silhouette
The tail of this streamer consists of a pair of red Rooster feathers that provide great movement in the water. Martin adds visual appeal with thin flash in two to three colours. This version of Pelle's BBB uses Tinsel Blend Hair in the Black/Red colour combination. Similar colours can be found in the popular Hedron Original Flashabou and can be mixed yourself. To match the colour tone of feathers and flash, he ties in a wing as well as the body made of Steve Farrar's UV Flash Blend. These synthetic fibres by Fishient/H2O feature a great structure, allowing for volume despite minimal material use. The UV Flash parts provide an additional shiny effect.
One of the most universal colour combos for Martin is black/red, but other combinations are also very successful. For winter, for example, he ties this pattern in blue/white/silver and green/gold/black. Here you can give free rein to your creativity and experiment wildly.
White/Blue/Silver is a great color combination for winter fishing
Martin particularly likes to fish this pattern on floating line or on an intermediate. The setup for the BBB includes a fluorocarbon leader about the length of the rod and a bite guard made of single strand titanium with 25lbs. (e.g. from Knot2Kinky). The streamer is knotted directly to the titanium using a Perfection Loop. For a quicker change - for example to another colour - Martin uses a snap.
A snap for a quick change to another colour
The fine Tinsel Blend Hair plays particularly well in the water and is much more discreet than many other flash materials due to the lack of holo particles. An alternative is the classic Hedron Flashabou, which also has a narrow cut and is available in great, ready-made colour combinations or can be mixed yourself.
The BBB was successful once again
Pelle's BBB' is tied on a Gamakatsu F314 in hook size 2/0. This hook is the perfect size for streamers around 15cm and is 100% reliable - even on big fish. The medium-length shank offers enough space to form a body with a nice silhouette. Thanks to the large hook bend, the Gamakatsu F314 has excellent hooking properties and sits securely in the pike's mouth. With a different hook (e.g. an Ahrex TP610 Trout Predator in 4/0 or even 6/0) you can tie the streamer much larger - while keeping the materials and tying steps identical.
Pelle and the BBB (Bleeding Black Baitfish)
Pelle's BBB is a very universal streamer. Because the streamer is secured with just a little UV glue, it has a low dead weight. This allows an extremely slow presentation, e.g. for winter fishing. However, when the water gets warmer and the pike are more active, this streamer can be stripped quickly. It dives directly and starts fishing immediately.
The small eyes of this streamer are 4.5mm - 6mm in size (up to 9mm for large hooks) and can be chosen to match the colour combo of Pelle's BBB. Silver, red or yellow are our personal favourites.
