Classic Finish – Modern Technology. The Thomas & Thomas Exocett SS is a versatile premium rod
Why the Exocett SS?
The Exocett SS was specifically designed for fishing with heavy or sinking lines and/or large flies. With a unique rod taper that combines a stiff tip with a flexible midsection, it offers an excellent balance between power and flexibility. This design allows for precise casting of heavy flies with minimal effort. The feedback when fighting fish is exceptional, thanks to a lightweight and responsive blank made with the proprietary StratoTherm Resin technology. This not only increases the rod’s robustness but also ensures a fast recovery and excellent casting performance.
For sinking lines, large streamers, and poppers – The Exocett SS by T&T is a real powerhouse!
Design and Features
The Exocett SS is characterized by thoughtful, high-quality craftsmanship:
- Blank: Made from a multi-modular material with low swing weight to minimize vibrations and maximize sensitivity.
- Guides: Titanium frame stripping guides with ceramic inserts, as well as flexible RECoil titanium snake guides ensure saltwater durability.
- Handle and Reel Seat: The handle is made from ultra-premium cork, combined with a stable fighting butt made of a reinforced cork composite. The matte black aluminum reel seat is corrosion-resistant and features dual uplocking components.
Thomas & Thomas Technologies
- Multi-Modular Strato-Therm Blank
The blank of the Exocett SS is a crisp, powerful blank that loads smoothly and has a very fast recovery. The powerful backbone is not engaged during short-range precision casts, but only when casting flies over long distances in the wind, transferring all its power into the fly line. The multi-modular blank helps dampen excessive shocks from heavy flies or sinking lines, creating distance and accuracy with fewer false casts.
- Proprietary Resins
The performance of graphite fibers depends on the quality of the resin binding them together. T&T has worked with leading industry companies to develop their own resin that enhances the performance of graphite materials. In this resin, T&T uses nanoscale particles to eliminate microscopic voids in the graphite. Filling these tiny gaps with this high-performance resin improves the strength, durability, and damping properties of the rod blank, while reducing overall weight.
- Ferrule Reinforcement Process (FRP)
The ferrules on fly rods are subjected to the greatest stresses. For this reason, T&T rolls a strategic additional layer of high-strength graphite by hand over these areas. In addition to reinforcing the ferrule, this process also gives the fly rods a distinctive detail.
- Optimal Blank Curing (OBC)
The performance characteristics of graphite blanks and the resins used depend heavily on the curing process. Changes in the curing process are immediately reflected in the blank's performance. T&T takes the curing process seriously, conducting it with a controlled and precise temperature regulation process. The OBC helps T&T achieve the highest possible performance from graphite and resin, ensuring stringent quality control.
- Low Friction Finish (LFF)
Anyone who has held a T&T rod with the LFF will notice how special the blank feels. The Low Friction Finish uses nanotechnology to create a smooth surface that repels water and eliminates surface tension, reducing resistance on the fly line during casting. The LFF gives Thomas & Thomas rods a performance advantage in casting and shooting fly lines.
First choice for large trout and big streamers – The Exocett SS 250
Rod Models and Applications
The Exocett SS is available in various models with different line weights and casting capabilities:
- Exocett SS 200 (#7):
The smallest model in the series, with a #7 line weight, is the perfect fly rod for streamer fishing for trout or perch. It effortlessly casts weighted flies and sinking lines. A few strokes are enough to lift the line from the water and accurately place it again.
The powerful backbone of the rod also helps lift sinking lines from a boat or belly boat when fishing for perch without straining the rod.
- Exocett SS 250 (#8):
An excellent rod for fishing large trout like the marble trout, as well as for light fishing for zander or pike. The #8 Exocett SS is a versatile rod we especially appreciate for high-water fishing for large trout and for light pike fishing in shallow waters.
The rod offers, like all other models, exceptional lifting power, making it particularly easy to lift and cast sinking lines and large or weighted flies. In tropical saltwater, we favor using it for bonefish and other species.
- Exocett SS 350 (#9/10):
The 350 Exocett is one of our go-to rods for pike fishing. It offers tremendous power for fishing with heavy sinking lines and casting large poppers or pike tubes. These benefits can also be applied to fishing for tropical species, both in freshwater and saltwater. Whether fishing for permit, tarpon, golden dorado, or peacock bass, the Exocett SS 350 is the perfect choice!
- Exocett SS 450 (#11/12):
The large SS with a 450-grain line weight effortlessly handles both #11 and #12 fly lines – with little effort. This makes the rod a favorite for fishing with heavy tackle, such as for large pike, huchen, or other strong predators in saltwater (GT, tarpon, and more). Additionally, the large fighting butt of the 450 makes it easy to subdue fish during the fight. If you love fishing for big pike in open water with very heavy sinking lines, like when using live-scope, the T&T Exocett SS 450 is the perfect fly rod for you!
