A box of dry flies, a leader, some fly grease and a nice set of rod, reel and line. You don't need much more for a great day on the trout river!
The first weeks on the Trout River are always special. The trees still bear few leaves, the water is cold and clear. Many fish are still standing deep at the bottom. But: In the warmer hours of the day we can already observe the first insect hatches - and maybe a few cautious rings on the surface. This allows us to enjoy some exciting dry fly fishing during the early season already. For this purpose we have grabbed a few products from our store and tested them for you on the river.
- Rute - Guideline Fario Classic: As a rod we have chosen the Guideline Fario Classic. As the name 'Fario' underlines, this rod series is designed for trout fishing. The Fario Classic combines a timeless, classic look with the latest carbon fiber technologies and current possibilities of rod building. The different models cover all facets of trout fishing and with a universal #4 or #5 line class, you are able to use the full range of flies (dry flies, nymphs and smaller streamers) so you can adapt to all situations quickly. The medium-fast, deep action of the Fario Classic's deep green blank is ideally suited to present your fly with precision and feel with an overhead cast or roll cast. The line loop can be controlled precisely and with the right line, the blank can be loaded in a very relaxed way. This is fun! In the drill, the fine tip feathers head bumps and runs very confidently - even with large brown trout. This also allows finer leader tips to be fished. A plus point in clear water!

- Rolle - Hardy FW DD 4000: The 4000 model of the Hardy Ultralite FW DD weighs just 102g and is ideally suited for a variety of different rods because of its narrow cut. It also matches the silver reel seat of the Fario Classic very well in terms of color. From class #4 to #6, this reel covers the vast majority of modern trout fishing situations and is one of our absolute price/performance favorites if you're looking for a universal solution. The FW DD's drag runs very smoothly and is perfectly adequate to keep even large brown trout in close range. A minimalist reel for fine, elegant trout rods. In addition to the clean workmanship, we particularly like this reel series that you can directly estimate the set drag pressure by means of the colored markings on the brake knob.

- Schnur - Guideline Fario Elite: The Fario Elite WF is the new edition of the popular Fario fly line from Guideline. The new Fario is available with different tapers and if you want to be very universally positioned, then the 'Elite' is just right for you. With a head length of about 10m, it's great for close range and medium distance fishing. But if necessary, this floating line will also serve your fly on the opposite shore. At the same time, the relatively long front taper of the Elite allows for very sensitive presentations. Perfect for clear water and shy fish. The line loads up the medium fast balnk of the Fario Classic rod very effectively. Therefore, it is not necessary to choose the line one class higher! For us one of the best allround lines on the market - and perfect for this set.

We stocked our fly box that day with a number of CDC dry flies (e.g. from Catchy Flies, Petitjean and Fulling Mill). In fast water and broken surface currents, imitations of sedges/caddis flies (ideally with a sighter on top) or patterns in parachute style work very well. And if the current is a bit more steady, then finer and smaller Mayfly patterns are suited too. Again, a little bit of CDC oil or gel will help and the flies will drift very high and long. In addition, they can sometimes carry a nymph and serve us as a bite indicator. If a trout does not want to come to the surface yet.

When it comes to leaders, we swear by Stroft's tapered leaders and tippets! With a 9ft leader and a .14mm tip we are very flexible and can use tippets in .14mm or .12mm depending on the speed of the water. The strength of the Stroft materials is so good that we can also fight strong, large brown trout without any problems in fast water.
