Spey Casting Variations - Simple, Stealthy, Effective!

Two-handed casting is not only fun, but above all, effective! Especially when your timing is right and the line creates as little noise as possible on the water. In our latest video, Stephan Dombaj gives you some helpful tips for effectively repositioning your Spey cast. Simple, stealthy, effective!

To effectively cover a salmon or sea trout river from both sides and in any wind, you essentially need four different casts: Single Spey (right + left) and Double Spey (right + left). These four fundamental casts will serve you perfectly, especially on larger waters. However, on smaller waters or in low water conditions, casts with a so-called "Sustained Anchor" can have a certain spooking effect. In a Sustained Anchor cast, the line is positioned on the water to initiate the change of direction for the next cast. And, logically, wherever we can avoid or reduce water contact with our line, we are much more stealthy, cause less disturbance, and ultimately have a better chance of catching a fish.

So, how do we avoid water contact with the line and the resulting noise during the direction change of our spey casts? Stephan Dombaj has the answer! In this video, he shows you a few simple, helpful tricks for repositioning your line in the air, making your Spey casts more effective.

Because, in the end, double-handed fishing is all about effectiveness. In practice, you may not always need these casts. However, is it good to know them? Absolutely, because low water situations will likely accompany us more often in the future, and then it's good to have a few aces up your sleeve. Besides, practicing these casts is incredible fun, they improve your timing, and they make you a better Spey caster. Have fun trying them out!
