Simple Flies - Under this motto we present you flies that are tied with few materials and in few steps. Because good flies don't necessarily have to be difficult - quite the opposite! These patterns can be tied quickly and easily. Patterns, that have proven themselves thousands of times in practice and with which you can quickly fill your fly box. We show you our interpretations and hope you have fun tying and fishing these Simple Flies. Let's go!
The Perdigon is a paradigm example of a 'Simple Fly': Tied in no time and as effective as it is simple. These distinctive patterns first appeared in Spanish nymph competitions and quickly caused a sensation due to their catchability. Today they can be found in fly boxes worldwide and in the portfolio of many well-known commercial fly tyers (e.g. Guideline).
The name "Perdigon" comes from the Spanish and means "pellet" - and this describes one of the central characteristics of these nymphs very precisely. Because of their slim silhouette and the coating of their body with UV glue, these nymphs sink through the water column like a stone. This makes it possible to search for Trout and Grayling deep on the bottom even with small nymphs. Long drifts are not necessary to reach the feeding zone. Two big advantages! In contrast to many other well-known nymph patterns, you won't find a thorax made of dubbing, an elaborate wing case or tying materials to imitate legs on Perdigon nymphs. Real Simple Flies!
With Perdigons you can imitate different Mayfly species depending on colour and size. Typical for Perdigons is a tail made of Coq de Leon, a slender body made of tying thread, Body Quill or similar and a ribbing made of etched peacock grass or a thin tinsel. A hot spot of bright floss or comparable yarn and a wing case indicated with dark marker on the upper side can also be found on many Perdigon nymphs. Finally, the varnishing or sealing of the body with clear superglue or UV glue is important. This makes the nymph sink even better and also makes it particularly robust. You can catch many, many fish with some Perdigons in your fly box!
You can choose between conventional nymph hooks, scud hooks and jig hooks. Hook sizes 14 to 18 in combination with tungsten beads in matching sizes (between 2 mm and 3.8 mm) have proved to be the best. When choosing the colour you can orientate yourself on the Mayflies of your water. With various shades of green and olive as well as a few lighter (beige, yellow) and darker (brown, black) patterns in the box, you are prepared for all eventualities.
The following tying materials are used for our Hot Spot Perdigon:
- Coq de Leon
- Veevus Body Quill
- Pearl Tinsel (small)
- Marker e.g. Edding (black)
- Veniard Glo Brite Floss (orange)
And very important: Seal the body 1-2 times with UV glue. Our favourite for this are laser and glue from Fly Scene or Gulff.
