Simple Flies - Under this motto we present you flies that are tied with few materials and in few steps. Because good flies don't necessarily have to be difficult - quite the opposite! These patterns can be tied quickly and easily. Patterns, that have proven themselves thousands of times in practice and with which you can quickly fill your fly box. We show you our interpretations and hope you have fun tying and fishing these Simple Flies. Let's go!
An emerger can be fished not only just below the surface or in the film of the surface current, but also one floor below: In midwater. Especially when a hatch is in progress, but Trout and Grayling do not give themselves away by rings on the surface. The perfect time for a weighted 'emerger'.
Excellent for these situations are nymphs tied with a hackleof CDC, which can imitate both the nymph shell and developing wings. The soft CDC feather pulses gently in the current to attract the attention of the fish. We prefer fishing nymphs like the 'Black CDC Emerger Jig' on warmer days, in clear water, in shallower and faster river passages and as a dropper fly in tandem with a heavier pattern. But also during a first tentative hatch at the beginning of the season, but when the fish are still too sluggish to rise to the top, we tie this nymph to the leader. So, all in all, quite a few situations in which this and similar patterns enjoy our confidence!
Simple Flies - Inspired by the Fulling Mill Tactical Jig Series
The 'Black CDC Emerger Jig' is inspired by the current Fulling Mill fly collection. In a very similar form, the small, discreet jig nymph is part of the popular Tactical Jig Series of the British fly manufacturer. For us, one of the most beautiful patterns from the series and also very successful in international competitions.
The Black CDC Emerger Jig is tied on a #14, #16 or #18 size hook and weighted with a tungsten bead. However, slightly lighter than typical for the hook size. Especially if it is to be fished in combination with a second fly (on the sidearm or 'dropper'). Beads with a diameter of 3.0mm or 2.5mm are optimal.
For the Black CDC Emerger are used in detail:
- Cock feather for the tail (black)
- Wire (red)
- Pheasant Tail for the body (black)
- Glo Brite or Antron Yarn for the Hot Spot (chartreuse or yellow)
- CDC feather (natural, grey or black)
- Spectra Dubbing for the thorax (black)
- Jig Hook (e.g. by Hanak, Fasna or Soldarini)
- Slotted Tungsten Bead (black nickel)
The material list for the Black CDC Emerger Jig is short. A real Simple Fly! The central material for this somewhat lighter jig nymphe is a good CDC feather, which is hackled only once around the hook shank. It gives the pattern in the current the characteristic look and provides the very special charm. The overall dark color of this pattern is suitable for any water and also works very well on Trout and Grayling, which have already seen many flies.
With a selection of different sizes and weights you are well equipped for the whole year. And if you don't tie your own flies, we can highly recommend the current collection from Fulling Mill. There you will find this pattern and similar nymphs. We wish you a lot of fun with tying and tight lines on the water!
