Especially in spring Scud flies belong in the box of sea trout anglers. Because when many larger patterns are consistently spurned, then these little Gammarus can make a difference. In this tying video Lisa Jakubowski presents you a catchy pattern that can be tied quickly and easily thanks to our UV Mould Kit.
Sea Trout are called the 'fish of 1000 casts'. It is usually not quite that hard, but there are definitely days when it is not so easy to find - and catch - a nice bar of Baltic silver. Especially in the first, cooler weeks and months of the year it happens again and again that typical patterns like a Pattegrisen (or other bigger shrimps) or Baitfish imitations are consistently ignored by the Sea Trout. A trump card in the fly box is then a scud! Characteristic of a scud or Gammarus Locusta imitation is a curved shape and segmented body. At first glance, scuds may not offer the best energy balance, but they do occur in large quantities. The small crustaceans are primarily found in the flushing fringe and are among the first creatures to become active again when water temperatures rise after a cold winter. That's why the first milder days on the coast are perfect for fishing with scuds!

Fishing The Scud
The right presentation is particularly important for the success of a scud. The key to success are especially slow strips. In slow motion, the fly is moved with even strips and not infrequently provokes very aggressive takes! Long, thin leaders made of fluorocarbon have proven particularly suitable for this fishery and offer advantages in shallow and clear water. This is an exciting fishery where the first casts should definitely be made from shore. Because in many cases the Sea Trout come close to the shore to collect the small tang crabs in the slack water.
With a small repertoire of different colors and sizes of the Moulded UV Scuds you are perfectly prepared for the spring at the Baltic Sea and still catch when most larger patterns are spurned by the Sea Trout. And by the way: Tied on a hook of size #12 to #16, you can also use this pattern perfectly for Trout fishing on running waters. Because there, too, brown shrimps are the main food of salmonids - especially after periods of high water. Have fun tying and tight lines!
